The Art of Tango series continues (Nov 22 - Nov 30)

Dear friends,

We are very happy to announce the return of Hsueh-tze Lee, renowned Tango teacher and DJ based in Boston, USA, in November. This will be her third visit to Singapore since early 2007.

Hsueh-tze dances and teaches “Tango milonguero” - the way Tango is danced in the milongas of Buenos Aires. With many years of dancing and learning from the milongueros in Buenos Aires and her deep understanding of Tango music, Hsueh-tze brings an innovative approach to all her classes. She is able to distill complex concepts into simple logical steps. In fact, many of our own teaching methods and exercises have been inspired by what we had learnt from Hsueh-tze.

For those of you who has yet to experience the "Hsueh-tze effect" (See http://tango.yyquest.net/techniques/2007/the-hsueh-tze-effect/), we'd like to point out that Hsueh-tze has played a significant role in laying a strong foundation for close embrace dancing in the Singapore Tango scene. In fact, whether you are a near-beginner wanting to further your social dancing skills, or an experienced dancer desiring to explore the elusive connection when dancing close or simply to gain a better appreciation of music, Hsueh-tze has something unique to offer. Singapore Tango Fiesta (29-31 August)

This is a reminder that the Singapore Tango Fiesta held at the new Xen Bar will start this coming Friday through Sunday with the visiting couple Margarita Klurfan & Walter Cardozo.

Tango Elegancia: follow up

Dear friends,

Thank you all for making the Tango Elegancia weekend with maestros Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Misse another great success! They left our shores last Wednesday morning, again with very good impressions of the Tango lovers in Singapore.

With the closure of IXI Danza studio a few months ago, as well as increasing costs (air fares and hotel) and escalating exchange rate, holding this workshop was always going to be challenging financially. Fortunately, we did manage to break even. As always, it would have been impossible without the help of our friends, and we'd like to acknowledge in particular the following individuals: Wei Teng, Kathleen, Valerie, and Wai Chung for helping to spread the word among their friends and new-comers, and Kim Soon and Hwei Lan for their help at the reception during the grand milonga.

For the people who took part in the workshop and milonga, we'd really appreciate it if you can give us some feedback. For example, what areas do you think we need to improve on for future events? Here are some categories to start you off.

Isaac's Midsummer Nights' Tango
===============================

Where to from now, you may ask?

For a start, and especially for the people who was exposed to the elegance of Javier and Andrea for the first time, it is imperative that you continue to practice what you had learnt during the workshops in order to retain that knowledge. For this we highly recommend the Sunday practica at Jitterbugs, 6-8pm every Sunday. This is where you can practice alongside the more senior dancers and get some help if necessary.

Another good news is that Isaac Ho (http://lonewalker.blog.co.uk/), who has been in Buenos Aires for the past two years, studying Tango intensively with Javier and Andrea, among other things, and recently featured in Channel U's "Find me a Singaporean", will be back in Singapore in July for one month. During his stay, Isaac will be sharing his knowledge in a series of workshops and guided practicas. There will also be some special milongas during this period.

Special Request "Milonga con Amigos" on 24 May

Dear friends,

The grand milonga at Serangoon Gardens Country Club is just a day away!

Javier and Andrea touched down at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 yesterday and they look forward to meeting all of the tangueros and tangueras in Singapore tomorrow.

We have received a special request from the maestros. During the milonga, they hope that all of us can fully enjoy the performances they will be putting up, instead of looking at the performances through the lenses of cameras. They therefore would really appreciate your understanding to refrain from videoing the performances at the milonga.

However, be assured that you can still relive the magic of their performances, because we have made arrangements for the performances to be recorded and the clips will be made available on the IXI Danza's website for you to download after the workshops. Let's give our Argentine visitors a warm Singaporean welcome and appreciation by paying them the full attention they deserve for the performance.

A final house-keeping note: Serangoon Gardens Country Club has provided (limited) complimentary parking for the milonga. However, this is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Once again, we look forward to having a great party with you tomorrow night.

Tango Elegancia: A few more days to go!

Dear all,

The maestros Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Misse will be reaching our shores in a few days' time!

Here are some last-minute information about the workshops and milonga.

Workshops on 24-25 May
=====================

The workshops will be held at Jitterbugs, Millenia Walk #03-02. The classes will be starting at 11am on Saturday 24 May and 1.30pm on Sunday 25 May.

Currently the first class "TS1: Embrace, connect and walk" is quite full so we won't be accepting any more walk-ins unless you are coming as a couple. Places are still available in the other workshops so come on down if you have not already registered.

Remember to bring your own water and snacks to nibble on during the breaks; some drinks can also be purchased at the studio's counter.

There will be an opportunity to video a recap of the class material at the end of each class, but not during the class itself. However, we do ask you to respect our invited teachers and not place such clips on YouTube.

"Milonga con Amigos" on 24 May
===============================

Milonga con Amigos at Serangoon Gardens Country Club is shaping up to be another wonderful milonga!

The buffet dinner will be served from 8pm, with free-flow (non-alcoholic) drinks lasting the entire night. A bar will also be available during the milonga. For those intending to bring their own wines, the corkage will be SG$10 (wine), SG$15 (champagne) and SG$20 (hard liquor). As the hot food will be cleared from ~10.20pm, we hope that you will arrive early to enjoy the sumptuous buffet and then dance the night away.

Performance by the maestros (3 songs) will take place at ~11pm.

Tango week coming in May!

From the middle of May, the Tango community in Singapore is in for a special treat! Starting from May 20 right through 27 May, there will be one week of intensive Tango activities as Singapore is graced by some of the best talents in Tango, who will be sharing their knowledge in many exciting workshops and performances.

1. Tango Elegancia with Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Miss�, 23 - 27 May

Between 23 - 27 May, IXI Danza will be hosting the second trip of Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Miss� to Singapore, who have dazzled Tango dancers worldwide with their exquisite musicality and a highly dynamic close-embrace dancing. The idea was actually hatched during our trip last year to the 2007 Taipei International Tango Festival. After months of preparations, we are excited to announce their impending arrival! In the current Asian tour, Javier and Andrea will also be visiting Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo.

Hot on the heels of the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Tango Festival the maestros Guillermo Merlo and Fernanda Ghi will be visiting Singapore, bringing with them the Tango show �The Four Seasons�. Their previous visit was in 2006 where they had a big impact on the local dancers with their entertaining approach to Tango.

In the tradition of monthly "independent" milongas, there will be a milonga this coming Friday (18th April) at Bobby's Taproom, Chijmes. For all the non-"old timers", this place actually has a bit of a history in the local Tango scene, because this was the venue for weekly milongas in the early months of 2002. Now that the place has been renovated, and with new wooden flooring and an apparently excellent sound system, it is definitely worth checking out. Hope to see you all on Friday!

Upcoming "independent" milongas

Dear friends,

We wish you a very happy Chinese New Year and Gong Ci Fa Cai!

Thanks to all of you who came to support IXI Danza's final milonga and the encouraging words from those who could not make it! It was great to be able to catch up with friends: some who had just returned to Singapore, some who were about to take bold steps in their life journey and of course our own students who finally made it onto the milonga floor.

We had an attendance of over 50 people, which actually outdid the turnout for our opening party! However, even more encouraging was the fact all had come to dance, and not as "spectators". This shows a definite improvement in our Tango community compared to even last year. Furthermore, despite the large numbers of dancers on the dance floor, navigation was good and the night remained largely injury-free. For the record, the milonga was not stopped because everyone had dropped - although definitely getting close to it - but because the sun was about to rise... Congratulations to the small group of 15 or so (roughly one third if you do your maths) who made it all the way to 5am!

For the past two years, IXI has concentrated on running quality events in a studio setting. Nevertheless we recognise the need to increase exposure of Tango in nice, visible venues in order to increase Tango's profile and attract more new people to take up Tango. Well, I am very happy to announce two independent efforts in the coming months.

The first is a milonga organised by Valerie, who is ably supported by Tian Haw as DJ. This milonga is held at Brasserie Wolf, a nice French restaurant that has been featured in Tatler Singapore's Best Restaurant 2008. Being so near Valentine's Day, why not come down on Saturday 16 February and treat your special someone to a fine dinner and a night of relaxing Tango? Please contact Valerie directly to confirm a place. (Details below)

In addition, Upper Club at Chijmes is organinsing a one-off milonga on Saturday 1 March. This milonga is entirely an initiative by Upper Club - a premier dining and dance venue with elegant interior and wonderful floor - but if the event is successful there is every chance that milongas at Upper Club can remain a monthly fixture in the Singapore Tango calendar. We strongly urge you to support this first milonga so you won't miss out on a chance to dance in a classy venue every month! For this Tango-only night, IXI has been approached to provide advice and I will be the guest DJ for the night. (Details below)

Upcoming workshops

Meastros Javier Rodriguez and Andrea Misse will be returning to Singapore in May!

We are currently finalising the details of the Masterclass workshops to be held in the second last week of May. The program will consist of weekend workshops plus milonga at a glamorous venue. Stay tuned for more details in the coming month.
